PermaLink Do not go gentle into that good night * (another DNSBL bites the dust)
The monkeys.com DNSBL zones are dead as of nearly a week ago. Took me a while to pick this up because:

  • I am very busy, and
  • Ronald Guilmette (of monkeys.com) has defied the usual convention and not listed all of IPV4 in his dead DNSBL zones, but has instead emptied them all - so instead of any IP address giving a DNSBL hit (as happened with Osirusoft and ORBZ), no IP address will give a hit.

Ron's valediction may be found here, and it makes very sad reading. Ron seems to believe the bad guys are winning; and he may be right in the short term. Sooner or later, backbone ISPs and law enforcement may be forced to start to take a more active role in policing the 'net instead of leaving it to a few lonely souls like Ron who have done it for too long with little official support, no funding and precious few thanks.

The list of DNSBLs in use here is ever shrinking. We have now removed proxies.relays.monkeys.com from our look-ups here. I seem to recall there was also a monkeys.com formmail list and obviously that has gone too.

Apparently, the Compu.Net block list has suffered a similar fate, though that was not a list we have ever used here.

* Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light
