Thank you for the email giving the permission for the domain names – I passed that onto the domain name company, however they are requesting that the permission is given on headed paper. Would it be at all possible for you to fax them a copy on headed paper giving your authorization for us to use those domain names?
Headed paper? Headed paper?
We're living in the noughties now.
I revert with this:
Will a signed (SMIME) email not do? I can send that directly to your registrar.
After all, headed paper is easily forged, and faxed headed paper more easily still, but no-one can forge my x.509 signature. A signed email would be absolute proof that it really is me granting permission and not some interloper pretending to be me.
But no, it is not to be. Business partner reverts a final time:
I did ask them, but they say that it must be on headed paper or they will not accept it. Sorry
I did mention that this is a domain registrar, didn't I? You know? A company whose business is technology.
Sometimes I feel like giving up.
Now, where's that Microsoft headed paper? Perhaps I can have some fun with this after all.

Hey Chris, you don't need headed paper from Microsoft, all you have to do is cut and paste something together that looks reasonably official -- how are they going to know the difference?

Other fun possibilities:
- concoct "headed paper" of the registrar
- use "headed paper" of the business partner
That should drive the point home...
