I use the "Download Statusbar" extension to view and manage my downloads within FF. It works really well, and the downloads are pausable/restartable in most cases. Linkage - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26

I use the Free Download Manager, too. Full version, but torrent disabled (normally, but I can enable it for some special downloads). It also comes with a Firefox plugin.

I haven't used a download manager in about a year, but when I did it was FlashGet: http://www.flashget.com/en/download.htm. It worked very well with FlashGot and was unobtrusive. The only problem I ever had was sometimes one of the pieces of the file would timeout because the server didn't allow multiple connections from the same host. I assume that would be an issue for any download manager.
I'm assuming you know about patching the Windows XP SP2 TCP/IP connection limit "feature", too: http://www.lvllord.de/

I use DownThemAll! which is a true firefox addin, and works extremely well. It also has a great feature which allows you to download all the links of a particular type on the page & more

I second DownloadThemAll!, it's a great add in with some very nice UI features and doubles as a download accelerator. A must for getting things downloaded a bit faster and having better control over your downloads - includes very nice pause and resume management and list management.

I'd second DownThemAll! Extremely fast (up to ten streams, I think) and very resilient so far.
