The Vatican
announced the other day a new set of seven sins for the noughties *. It isn't clear to me whether the new seven sins are deadly, like the older ones, or whether they replace or merely supplement those original seven deadly sins.
But if the noughties can have seven new sins, the t'internet can too.
Here's my first draft of seven new sins for home Internet users.
Seven
Weighing in at number seven, we have
failing to backup the files on your home computer.
Six
At six, we have the unspeakable sin of
failing to patch your OS and apps (and that goes double for Windows).
Five
Fifth place goes to another hardy perennial,
not using adequate security software (by which I specifically mean anti-virus and firewall, and Windows firewall doesn't count).
Four
Add this to the list of things you
must never do. Connecting your home computer directly to that ADSL or cable modem.
Three
At three we have one of those annoyances that just won't go away and has now become a sin for its pains -
passing on Internet chain letters.
Two
At two we have a relative newcomer,
installing software without checking its provenance thoroughly.
One
And in first place we have the one sin that will send you straight to hades -
asking me to clean up your mess when it all goes wrong.
* I know. Sin. Noughties. No pun intended.
