I had this error when I tried to install the 8.01 client over the existing 8.0 Admin/Designer/Client. The naming of the files has changed on the IBM passport site. Make sure that you are installing the same client(s) that are already on your PC. Agreed, a more helpful error message is needed.

It would help if I could get access to Passport online and download the right client, I suppose

Chris, I found a workaround for this. Just change the installtype= line of your notes.ini to match the product type you are installing (from 6 for clientonly to 2 for all clients).

Didn't have that problem upgrading my 8.0 basic (C++) admin designer client to 8.0.1 standard (Eclipse).
So it depends.

The same used to happen in R7, surprised you haven't come across it before.
I wouldn't recommend the workaround as you may well be left with orphan files that aren't upgraded during the install process.

Chris,
Had the same problem and thanks to some responses on my blog, found a solution. It seems the new full client (client, admin and designer) is now name Designer. I had downloaded the wrong client and was trying to install the basic client over the full one.

Just had the same problem upgrading a v6 client to v8.. Had me foxed.
Changing the install type worked a treat, many thanks!
