PermaLink Is Skype telling us the truth?
Yes, that explanation by Skype of last week's trouble as being the result of a mass reboot of Windows PCs following the monthly update does seem to beg more questions than it answers. For example:
  • Windows update happens every month - why have we not seen this failure mode before?
  • Why did it seemingly happen 24 hours late (the mass reboot would have been at 03:00 Wednesday, but Skype went down a day later, on Thursday)?

These questions and some other interesting observations may be found at the SANS ISC Handlers' Diary yesterday.

There's also some talk of a proof of concept exploit against Skype P2P that may have been used in a DoS attack. Skype denies this, but unless we start to hear some more credible explanations than that patch Tuesday story, what are we to believe?
