PermaLink Two WINMAIL.DAT gotchas
1. Native handling of TNEF attachments in Domino 7.0.2

This works best if you turn it on, which you do using a notes.ini switch (TNEFEnableConversion=1).

It is off by default so you must actively decide you want to use it - it won't just happen...

What we learned - read the manual.

2. Beware reply with history

A colleague of mine and user of Outlook occasionally sends me TNEF emails. I think he does it to annoy. Recently he sent one which I picked up on my Blackberry. I failed to notice the attachment, hit reply and composed a response which I then sent. Some time later, the sender complained to me that I had merely sent back to him an exact copy of the email he had sent me in the first place.

By default, reply on the Blackberry quotes the original message including attachments. So I had sent him a plain text reply, the plain text of his original message and WINMAIL.DAT, which of course only contained the rich text of the original inbound message.

Outlook had spotted the WINMAIL.DAT and simply ignored the rest of my reply - if there's a WINMAIL.DAT there, then that's what I'll use (said Outlook) and to hell with how it got there in the first place.

Nice.

What we learned - always remove WINMAIL.DAT attachments from replies.

That's why we love the TRANSPORT NEUTRAL format. *sigh*
