PermaLink Groups in Domino Server Config Documents
A number of people have expressed surprise at my assertion in my piece entitled "Populating your whitelist using Pareto analysis" that it is possible to use groups in the Domino Directory for whitelists.

In fact it is not only possible to use groups in almost any server config field that would normally contain email addresses, DNS host or domain names or IP addresses *, it is actually preferable in many cases.
  • Being text fields, the fields in the server config document cannot grow beyond 64k. It is conceivable that you will run out of space when populating them directly instead of using groups. By using groups, or even nested groups, you extend the capacity of local black and whitelists without practical limit.

  • Where you populate server config fields directly instead of with groups, you may need to give editor access to those server config documents to people whose job function does not otherwise justify it. By using groups, you can safely delegate some or all of the task of maintaining lists of wanted or unwanted domains and IP addresses.

  • Where you populate server config fields directly instead of with groups, you will find in most cases that the SMTP Inbound Controls tab becomes very crowded and difficult to navigate.

You could use general purpose groups for most of these local black and whitelist groups but it is advisable to use servers only groups lest any user inadvertently attempts to use them for mail addressing.

* Notable exceptions are the fields which contain the names of DNS black or white lists to be used. You must populate these directly with the relevant DNSBL/DNSWL zone names.

A further point of confusion: when using groups, IP addresses should be surrounded by square brackets, just as they are in the relevant config doc fields.

Thought that went without saying - evidently not

"that the SMTP Inbound Controls tab becomes very crowded and difficult to navigate"...

I've used UltraEdit (www.ultraedit.com) for years for various tasks. One of the most important tasks is to quickly copy/paste/sort/return data in various fields that tend to get unweildy. (No, I don't own stock, but Ian is a good guy with a great product. Tell him I said Hi.)
