X-Mailer: Apple Mail (w.xyz)

That w.xyz is a numeric value which varies slightly - we have samples saying 2.725 and 2.728 in that position.

Any Mac users out there care to confirm whether any real email with this header is likely to exist or are these pure fabrication?

Yes, it's valid, at least the 2.728 i have proof of in my mailbox right now! I found it strange too and did a googlesearch and found this site. I think the the author is using Tiger (OS 10.4). If not, you'll hear from me again...
